When we think of interior design it is natural to think of terms of today, now, immediately . . . but in the seriously old days, there was the need to have a goodly head-count to shown them the ropes have been well and truly tried out. The strange little galley kitchens always amaze me. How the cook got all those meals prepared and up to the dining room still in fairly warm order does amaze me. There is one house nearby that has a small neat dining room near the salon and ballroom – there is a walnut table laid out ready for a dinner party for 10 people. The waiting staff use a very small but perfectly formd jib door which has been cut into the edge of the dining hall. The staff use this to discreetly move in and out of the room with the trays of foods and wonderful syllabub puddings. Very tasteful and modern for its day.
